The WEC confirmed reports of a Featherweight shootout scheduled for June 1st, between two of the biggest names in the world for that division.  Jens ‘L’il Evil’ Pulver will face off against Uriah ‘California Kid’ Faber in the June 1st event which is a fight that will satisfy many fans who have been waiting for the match since Pulver joined the organization.

Jens Pulver is most well known for his time in as the Lightweight Champion of the UFC years ago and more recently for his role as a coach in The Ultimate Fighter 5 reality series on Spike TV.  In that series, Pulver faced off against long time nemesis BJ Penn in a coaching competition that culminated in a coaches showdown for the finale.  Penn took the submission victory over Pulver, avenging a decision loss that had haunted him since the early days of his UFC Lightweight career.

Following that loss, Pulver joined the WEC at a more favorable Featherweight class, were he could potentially be the bigger, stronger fighter on any given night.  Jens won his first bout over Cub Swanson in convincing fashion, securing victory via Guillotine Choke in 35 seconds of the first round.  That win and Pulver’s career history earned him a shot at the current title holder, Faber.

Uriah Faber is as dominant a fighter as you will find in MMA today, currently riding a 12 fight win streak and showing no signs of slowing down.  In fact, Faber has only one career loss in 21 fights and that loss was to the up and coming UFC Lightweight contender, Tyson Griffin in 2005.

It should be a great fight period, with Faber looking to show his dominance extends to even the most notable Lightweight talents in the game.   Pulver on the other hand will be looking to make moves on the comeback trail, showing he can adapt with the times in a sport which has grown around him.  He was able to break an 11 fight win streak with his last victory over Cub Swanson so he would certainly like to step it up and take Faber’s 12 fight streak as his next trophy in the fight game.

Update: Anyone looking for the event who doesn’t get Versus (I am receiving it through TSN in Canada)

    fab/grif rematch nothing else matters

  2. admin says:

Griffin is the only fighter to get a win over faber, so you would think he would be interested in avenging the loss.
    Who moves though? Catch weight?
If Griffin ever drops a few in a row, he may make the move to the WEC to be a huge 145r, but considering his success at 155, it doesn’t seem likely.

  3. Ron Jeremy says:

Uriah is a baby. I hope he loses!

  4. IvanK says:

Why is Urijah a baby? That’s a pretty odd statement. You may not like him, but his record speaks for itself and it’s a good fight that he will likely win over Pulver. You should explain your ideas better.

  5. Dedan says:

What I’ve seen of Faber is that he hasn’t really faced people a Pulver’s level. Charles Bennett. Good but you never know which Charles Bennett is going to show up. Jeff Curran, meh. He hasn’t faced a Gomi or a Penn either. We’ll see how it plays out.

  6. GeneralTHC says:

I agree totally. He hasn’t fact UFC level opponents– ONLY ONE and he lost!

  7. GeneralTHC says:

I agree totally. Faber hasn’t really faced UFC level opponents but once and he lost.

  8. Willidawg says:

Faber’s loss to Griffin was at the beginnings of his career and remember, he was attacked by thugs just prior to that fight. I’ve noticed that Faber seems to gets better each fight, his skills continue to broaden and this fight will indeed be a good test but I haven’t seen another fighter with explosive 5th round power like Faber. It seems Faber has been able to keep his thinking cap on through-out his fights, not to many slip-ups. Anyone can fall, doesn’t necessary mean they are a lesser fighter.

Uriah is the best MMA fighter pound for pound PERIOD!

I have followed Pulver, and Faber. By far Faber has more class and respect for the sport. It’s to close to call this fight, but I have faith in the Kid. Pulver has more to prove, but in the cage he’s in Faber’s house. Fabers stamina, skills, and unique abalities to inovate as he goes just goes to show that MMA is more than boxing with smaller gloves :). Pulver is a slugger by far, and can submit but not on the scale that Faber can. And all this UFC talk is funny, UFC is just a cash cow. You want real MMA catch Dream in Japan, WEC, KickBoxing in TaiLand just to name a few. This sport has been around for ages, leave it to America to turn it into another profit producing “UltimateFinacneCow” the UFC.

You say that the UFC sucks and all they do is try to make money, but if you are able to pay your fighters more you will attract the best fighters. Why would anyone fight WEC if they can win big in UFC and make four times as much money.

  14. admin says:

    hawker,

For a lot of the fighters, especially in the WEC, it comes down to weight classes. Being able to fight and your best, heaviest competitive weight is a huge advantage. It’s enough to keep guys like Faber in the WEC. (Both are owned by Zuffa anyway, so I’m sure they are influential in that regard. )

As for the heavier fighters, there is no real reason to stay out of the UFC if can be competitive in their divisions. Unless Dana White hates you…

Without question there has never been an ambassador to the sport of MMA such as Uriah Faber. His raw talent, ability to improvise inside the ring, physical conditioning, and dedication to training are only surpassed by his gracious comments after defeating his opponents. He is the perfect mix of talent and intellect! A true role model for aspiring MMA artists and fans alike. This is to take nothing away from Jens Pulver, who displayed shear grit in the face of such a well rounded opponent. Even in defeat, Jens displays true honor for the sport and unbelievable will till the final bell. This fight, These to athletes are a must view… beginning to end… for anyone who loves the sport!
